LAMAR
HAWKINS
DIRECTOR
Director
LAMAR HAWKINS has amassed quite a bit of experience in the
music promo and advertising game. Before arriving in France, he
studied cinema (directing) at the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS -
AUSTIN and at UCLA. While a student in Los Angeles, he
had the opportunity to work at the then pop-promo company, Propaganda
Films. His first jobs were on shoots with directors Nigel Fink,
Domenique Sena, Greg Gold and David Fincher. Okay, he was just a
runner but as he likes to say, "Hey you got to start
somewhere."
In
1990, Lamar moved to Paris. After a year's study (French language and
cinema), he made the decision to remain in France and, shortly
afterwards, began his career in advertising. His first job was in
commercials post-production for the company Editors (part of
PAC Productions). He worked with such well-known French
directors such as Jean-Paul Goude, Jean-Pierre Roux, Bertrand Blier
and Patrice Leconte...
He
moved on in 1993, producing for the award-winning BDDP Conseil (today
TBWA Worldwide - France). He remained with the agency until 1997 when
he joined the company Wanda Productions as international producer and
coordinator.
In
September of the same year, Lamar was given an opportunity he could
refuse taking on the task of rebuilding the French commercials house,
T.S.F. Productions.
As
executive producer, he recruited a new pool of young talented
directors and, in only two short years, produced over 35 spots. One
of the commercials was awarded a Silver Lion at the 1998 Cannes
International Advertising Festival (Air Liberté - Group
British Airways - agency BDDP&Fils).
In
1999 after almost ten years in advertising (post-production, agency
and executive production combined) and in spite of the success
achieved as producer,
Lamar
made a tough choice leaving the company T.S.F. in order to
devote his full time and energy to his life-long goal, Film and
television direction.
He
has since directed commercials (France Télécom, Danone,
OneTel...), television series (DaBox, Les Râleuses, KD2A) for
French television and shorts-features.
His
first film, Saint Bart’s Syndrome (2003) was
screened as part of the
Official
Selection - International Women in Film Festival, Bordeaux,
France.
The
film also received a Gold Remi Award at the 2004 WorldFest
International Film Festival, Houston, TX.
In
February 2004, Lamar directed the short-feature La Méprise
which is currently in post-production. He also has three feature
films in development:
L’Autoroute
de Soleil (adaptation of a French comic book, D+ Production,
Paris),
Napua,
The Men’s Land Princess (fiction film based on the life
of a French Polynesian
Princess
–Tiki Sunrise Pictures, Tahiti French Polynesia),
Service
Clientèle (adaptation of an acclaimed French short
novel),
